Overview
NCLR seeks to increase the number of Latinos involved in national service in their communities. Research indicates that youth who become involved in national service are more likely to be involved as adults. Further, institutions such as schools, nonprofit organizations, governments, and churches help shape the civic engagement behaviors of tomorrow’s adults. Youths’ experiences shape their lifelong attitudes toward giving and being involved. Now in its 11th year, the NCLR AmeriCorps*National Direct program helps reach these goals. AmeriCorps strengthens communities through projects that address education, public safety, the environment, and other unmet human needs. NCLR AmeriCorps members serve at local nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations, helping to build a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility. Through their service, members gain valuable job skills and experience, and life skills like teamwork and communication; they learn to set goals, and to challenge themselves. Members also earn an education award to pursue a college education or pay back student loans.
