Twenty-Five Civil Rights Organizations and Economists to Issue Bold Proposal to Congress for Resolving Debilitating Jobs Crisis

Groups Urge House Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid to Act Swiftly

Washington, D.C. – On Friday, February 19th at 9:30 AM ET, civil rights leaders and economists from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the AFL-CIO, the Center for Community Change, the Economic Policy Institute, the NAACP, and the National Council of La Raza will hold a press conference call to outline their proposal to Congress for legislation that provides immediate relief to people who are out of work and lays the foundation for a broad-based economic recovery that benefits all Americans.

The groups will discuss a number of recommendations to alleviate the current jobs and economic crises – recommendations that were detailed in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today. Top line recommendations include:

  • The extension of Unemployment Insurance and COBRA benefits through the end of the year;
  • Fast-tracked creation of jobs in the public sector that serve community-level needs;
  • Fiscal relief to help stabilize State and local governments and preserve essential services and safety net programs;
  • Immediate investment in the infrastructure of schools and public transit;
  • Quick action to prevent foreclosures.
